Frequently Asked Questions:
HERS Test Reports

What is a HERS test report?

Home Energy Rating System (HERS) was developed by the State of California Energy Commission (CEC) to evaluate homes in California according to a specific set of requirements. These requirements were developed to ensure that energy-related construction and equipment installations are done correctly, thus providing the homeowner with optimal energy efficacy. These ratings include field verifications and diagnostic tests to determine existing efficiency levels for various energy-consuming components such as:

  • Heating and cooling systems
  • Supply and return air ducting
  • Building envelope (exterior) air infiltration
  • Building envelope (exterior) insulation quality
Do I need one?

Generally speaking, if you have made any additions to a residence, have altered or installed a new furnace or air conditioner, insulation, or ductwork, you will need to pass a HERS test. If you are unsure, your city’s building department can advise you as to whether or not one will be required as part of the permit process.

Can't I just do it myself?

Unfortunately, no. HERS raters are specially trained, independent inspectors certified through a HERS provider and the CEC. A certified HERS rater is the only one who can produce and sign the proper forms that will be submitted to the city for the final inspection.

What is the process for completing my HERS test?

For your convenience, prior the testing we can work through phone and e-mail correspondence to make sure the test is as easy as possible. When ready, our HERS rater will set up a time come to your home to perform the tests.

What do I need in order to get a HERS report?

The only thing you need is an energy calculation calling out the specific HERS test and verifications that your project requires. You can typically get this from the designer or the Title 24 company that did the calculations.

What can I expect once my HERS testing is complete?

We can either print or email the necessary acceptance forms needed for your project. These items are required at your final inspection.
